Executive Team Bios

Nick van Dam, Ph.D., Founder and Chairman

Nick founded e-Learning for Kids because "one of the most powerful applications of the Internet is the opportunity to deliver high quality courseware – courseware that's designed to enhance the effectiveness of learning for a new generation of children. We have the duty as a society to provide all children around the world with the best learning solutions to be successful in their lives. It is the dream of the people of the e-Learning for Kids Foundation to make this a reality."

Nick is also the Global Director Learning, e-Learning Solutions and Technologies for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. He is an internationally recognized thought leader in Learning and Human Resources Development and the author of The e-Learning Fieldbook (2004, McGraw Hill). He lives in Hiversum, The Netherlands with his wife and son (born 1997).

Vicki Cerda, Director of Communications and Outreach

Vicki supports the Communications area with its responsibility to ensure that the right message is delivered across any medium to our varied audiences. Her role includes reaching out to current and prospective partners, sponsors and supporters and conference planning.

In addition to her volunteer work at e-Learning for Kids (and for the American Society of Training and Development), Vicki is a learning and training consultant with over 20 years of experience in planning, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating blended solutions. Prior to this, she was a Training Management Specialist at Florida Power and Light, one of the largest electric utilities in the US. Vicki lives in Miami, Florida (USA), speaks Spanish, and loves art, music, and film among many other interests.

Michael Williams, Director of Courseware Development
 

Michael Williams

Michael serves as the Director of Courseware Development at the foundation and has a background in the academic and electronic publishing arenas, the latter with a focus on e-Learning development. Michael has a Masters Degree in Instructional Design and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Michael uses the e-Learning for Kids course development process to interface with instructional designers, vendors, and quality assurance personnel to produce engaging, high quality courseware offerings.

Michael works for Elsevier, Inc., a world-leading publisher and information provider. He resides in Saint Louis, Missouri and was attracted to e-Learning for Kids as a way to give back. Michael enjoys the opportunity to help children around the world and is proud to be a part of the foundation.

Ariane van Rossem, Director International Baccalaureate (IB) Development

Ariane is responsible for the overall e-Learning development. This includes the enhancement of processes, instructional design standards as well as managing the volunteers for the foundation. It is our object to develop a complete primary school curriculum of e-lessons in the coming 5 years based on IB standards. 2011 will focus on 'Math World". With over 5 year experience in e-Learning development at TinQwise (Hilversum, Netherlands), Ariane knows how to organize challenging and adventurous projects. She has managed various projects for large companies, schools and government. She is capable of maintaining a good relationship with all parties involved and has a keen eye for transparent project.

Ariane loves to travel and to discover the various cultures this world has to offer. Her current base is Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Jenna de Ries, e-Learning Developer

As a member of IB Development team, Jenna supports e-Learning development for e-Learning for Kids. Jenna studied Communication, Administration and Management at the University of Utrecht. Jenna has seen different parts of the world and is inspired by different cultures. She also loves all foreign languages and speaks English, a bit of French, German, Spanish, Latin and Russian. Chinese is the next language on her list. "

Jenna strongly believes that everyone's future begins with education. Working for e-Learning for Kids brings all of this together: love for culture, language and education.

Judith Grimbergen, Director Photography and Collateral Design

Judith captures the impact of e-Learning for Kids "visually" and designs collateral for the foundation. Additionally, she promotes e-Learning For Kids in various ways.

Judith has a strong interest in child development and has visited a number of schools and projects where e-Learning For Kids courseware is being used.

Brian Petersen, Ph.D., Treasurer

Brian serves on the executive team overseeing the financial and tax matters for the US foundation.

Brian is presently the managing partner of inteLogica, Inc. a management consulting firm located in Southern California. He is a graduate of McGill and Concordia Universities located in Montreal, Quebec, where he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Educational Technology. He also volunteers in promoting and assisting schools in the integration of technology into their schools and curriculum. He hails from Mission Viejo, California (USA).

Gerard Scholtes, Financial Director

In his role as Financial Director for the Stichting e-Learning for Kids in the Netherlands, Gerard's main job is to monitor all monetary flows and budgets and to keep the EFK Board continuously informed in order to ensure goals are being optimally met. Also key is to regularly inform the supervisory authorities about the ins and outs from varying financial perspectives.

As a former entrepreneur of a Sports Business, Gerard is now in a position to contribute to this worthy cause.

Board Members

Pieter Boelens, Board Member EFK

Pieter functions as CEO of a new learning company Serious Toys. He is overall responsible for defining and executing the growth strategy of Serious Toys. Pieter studied Econometrics at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. After his study he started at Accenture a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company. Pieter worked for Accenture from 1988 till the end of 2008 in various positions and became partner in 2001. During his career he was responsible for the Banking business and outsourcing sales in the Netherlands and the Customer relationship management business in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Pieter initiated several education initiatives in the Netherlands such as the introduction of the ‘Teach for America’ model in the Netherlands.

Iris Koolen, Board Member EFK

Iris is co-founder and owner of TinQwise, a dutch based company, specialized in the creation and development of e-learning solutions for various companies and governmental organisations. TinQwise has an extensive reputation in the field of e-learning and won several (inter)national prizes. Iris served as CEO of TinQwise where she has spent her career in a range of general management, public relations, sales and new business development. She built the company to be one of the leading e-learning companies in the Netherlands. Iris has worked on many e-learning projects (e.g. KLM, DPWorld, Schiphol Group, Ministry of internal Affairs, ING etc.). She studied educational science and media technology at the universities of Groningen and Amsterdam.

Iris is founder and member of the board of the Branche Institute Learning Technology (BVLT). Iris is honoured to use her knowledge and experience to help the e-Learning for Kids Foundation because she believes that technology has a direct impact on education for children all over the world. She lives close to Amsterdam with her husband and three children of 13, 10 and 5.

Marcell Ham, Board Member EFK

Marcell is a successful serial entrepreneur and independent investor with a current investment focus in the Middle and Far East. From 1998 to 2003, Mr. Ham was the owner and director of an outdoor real estate enterprise located at Schiphol Airport, which he eventually sold in 2003. During this same period of time Mr. Ham owned, and sold, a well-known franchise in the Benelux. From 2004 to 2006 Mr. Ham was a Member of the Board of Management of international listed Real Estate Company with investments in Canada, Europe and the US. From 2006 to 2008 he was CEO of an industrial group in the Netherlands with activities in private aviation and media."

In addition to e-Learning for Kids, Mr. Ham is also an active advisor for a number of other entities including a company focused on renewable energy projects and a sports marketing company.

Yolande Veldt, Board Member EFK

Yolande started her own marketing consultancy firm in 2009 and works for various multinational companies. She studied International Management at the HES in Amsterdam, received a Masters degree, and soon started working as Account Director for several advertising agencies. In 1998 she moved over to the Mobile phone business and started at Ben Nederland. This company was later acquired by T-Mobile and she subsequently worked for T-Mobile International in both London and Bonn in various Marketing/Communication positions. In 2007 she became a partner of a start up company in the mobile phone business, Amatus Communications and served as Managing Director. She left the company in 2009 to start her own business and also began an MBA program of study at Nyenrode Business University."

Rutger Peters, Board Member EFK

Rutger is an Internet entrepreneur and currently serves as a founder and the "Company Dean" of the Internet Education startup Gynzy. The core focus of Gynzy is to create easy-to-use software that enables teachers to truly start using interactive whiteboards as an integral part of their teaching. Before Gynzy, Rutger co-founded in 2001 the Internet games company Zylom which with 25 million monthly users, is the leading Internet games destination in Europe for women playing games. Zylom was acquired in 2006 by RealNetworks (RNWK) after which Rutger became Vice President of Worldwide Revenue until leaving in early 2009.

Rutger tries to help foundations in the Education space such as e-Learning for Kids and BizWorld because he believes that the positive impact the Internet and technology can play in teaching kids is untapped and needs to become much more dominant. He lives close to Eindhoven, The Netherlands with his wife and two sons (6 and 8).

Advisory Board Bios

Elliott Masie, The MASIE Center

Elliott is an internationally recognized futurist, analyst, humorist and researcher on the critical topics of technology, business, learning and workplace productivity. He heads The MASIE Center, a think tank focused on organizational learning, and is an advisor to a wide range of government, education and non-profit groups.

Elliott selected the Foundation as one of two featured nonprofit organizations at Learning 2005. "e-Learning for Kids is one of the most important education projects of the past twenty years. The reason why has a simple answer – the future. We're living in an increasingly complicated and ever-changing world. We must provide the next generation with the best possible tools for learning. e-Learning for Kids is dedicated to the future, making online learning available to children and schools – anywhere and without charge," said Masie.

 
Allison Rossett, Ed. D., San Diego State University

Allison Rossett, Ed.D. is the Professor of Educational Technology at San Diego State University. Dr. Rossett is also a consultant in training and technology-based performance, a member of the ASTD International Board of Directors and the HRD Hall of Fame, and the author of several books on e-learning.

A native New Yorker, ping-pong champion in her youth and yo-yo'er in training, Allison has keynoted at conferences and events all over the world. She teaches classes and consults on workforce development, needs assessment and new media learning and performance.

 
David Holcombe, President & CEO of The eLearning Guild

David is Co-founder, President & CEO of The eLearning Guild, a global Community of Practice for e-Learning professionals now serving more than 35,000 members. He has been focused on learning and performance improvement for his entire professional career. Over the last 20 years, he has organized more than one hundred events across North America and Europe that have collectively provided tens of thousands of participants with information, ideas, and knowledge to enable them to leverage information technologies to improve education, knowledge, and performance.

What drew David to e-Learning for Kids? "When the kids of today enter the workforce, the use of technology and the ability to be self-directed in learning will be absolute requirements. e-Learning for Kids works to level the playing-field for all kids by making this a reality for all. It's a noble cause by an outstanding organization, and I am thrilled to support it."

 
Dirk Tussing, Learning Executive Exchange

As the Executive Director of the Learning Executive Exchange, a consortium of senior Chicago learning leaders, Dirk is committed to promoting greater visibility, influence and professional opportunities among its members and promoting local Thought Leaders by creating a highly visible knowledge sharing environment to increase awareness of progressive learning solutions, share best practices, and facilitate greater collaboration among members. Formerly of Arthur Anderson, Dirk is a current board member and international projects co-chair for the Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield, an advisor on the Strategic Planning Committee at Northwestern Illinois University, and chief architect for a new Learning Leaders CPE Certificate Program at DePaul University.

What attracted Dirk to get involved? As a native of Winnetka, Illinois since 1967, Dirk has personally experienced some of the best educational opportunities available worldwide. Seeing how corporate learning has been using technology to provide equal access to global workforces, Dirk has a keen interest to use Wikinomics strategies by helping others give back and to improve access to education on a massive scale.
